When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, one of the first things he did was to reestablish the core values of Apple to customers and to the world. The quote below was part of the “Think different” ad campaign in 1997.
“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
— Apple Commercial, 1997
This wasn’t just marketing hype. Steve Jobs was one of the crazy ones. He founded Apple, and he used it as a vehicle to “push the human race forward” with products made for creators (rather than computer specialists).
While the people in the “here’s to the crazy ones” commercial were all famous, the message was aimed at Apple’s current and future customers, “the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world.”
The message was: We see you. We “get” you. We are on the same team. We want to empower you. Let’s push the human race forward, together.
Steve Jobs saw Apple’s customers as world changers — people who “push the human race forward.”
In the same way, I see people who live their dreams as world changers. The first world we change is our own. It’s not easy. I know. But it is rewarding.
Finally
The idea of “living your dreams today” does not seem crazy to me, but I suppose it is to most.
Pick a dream and start where you are, with what you have, and what you know. Live it day by day, and then you grow.
Here’s to your success!
