You can grow by taking training for your job, and accepting more responsibility. This is a good approach that helps make you become more valuable to your employer and the job market.
While I worked for others, I always tried to find growth opportunities that could help me as well as my employer. I totally believe in working for others, and yourself. The key is to find a worthy business to align with and find a good group of people to work with. It's not easy, but it's worth the effort.
Founder Growth
The dream builder approach is to follow a dream and intentionally choose how and where you want to grow. This is growth your way.
You are the founder of your dreams. The thoughts and desires of a founder are different from those of a worker/contributor. The skills a founder cultivates are different from those of a worker. The best thing is to have worker/contributor skills, and founder skills!
Are you following your dream? Pick something that matters to you and is also useful to others. Become a founder, and grow in new ways!
How to Start
An avocation is a familiar concept, and one possible way to start. Many people have avocations. An avocation is like a job, but you don't do it for the money. You do it for personal fulfillment. For example, the job that funded my life was computer programming, but my avocations have been many. I have tried travel writing, writing about art, selling gifts for auto enthusiasts, becoming a modern furniture expert, writing about car movies, learning philosophy, and many more things. Most all of my experiments were a way to express my need to create something that was meaningful to me, and of value to others. These experiments were also crucial in refining my purpose and my dreams.
Some of my experiments were focused on creating a side hustle. These experiments caused more frustration than I imagined, and I finally quit pursuing side hustles. A side hustle is not a dream. Money doesn't motivate me to do things I don’t care about. Yes, I wish I had more money! But it can't be my motivation, because it drains the life from me.
So how do you start? Imagine a dream you’re willing to work for. A dream that is big enough to work on for ten, twenty, even fifty years. Then start working on it. Allow your dream to teach you. Remember, it’s not a job; it’s a dream. And make sure to read FOUNDER!
