Life can be complicated. We have thousands of thoughts per day. We are bombarded with distractions. It's easy to get lost, like a ship in the fog. We need a lighthouse to guide us.
There are many things I want to accomplish and there are certain rewards I want to obtain. But sometimes the rewards I want scream louder than the difference I want to make.
My highest purpose is to continue to exercise my potential in a way that also helps others. That is my lighthouse.
A few days ago a helpful phrase popped into my head that I will continue to use: purpose first.
Purpose First
There is a reason marketers come up with catchy slogans. They are easy to remember and they are loaded with meaning.
Purpose First reminds me of three things:
1. It keeps me focused on my highest purpose. My highest purpose is encapsulated in my success definition: To live a life of integrity while pursuing my dreams in a way that helps others.
2. It reminds me that making a difference is more important to me than recognition or money. This gives me patience and perseverance.
3. It keeps me allocating my best hours on the most important things in my life.
Finally
I haven’t found any stories such as "success was way easier than I imagined, it happened so quickly, and with little effort!" Well, maybe there are some products that deceptively imply quick success.
Our dreams may not bring us the results we hope for in a timely manner. It’s good to have a lighthouse that can keep us heading in the right direction. Even Luke Skywalker had to be reminded to “use the force.”
To get through the tough period of learning and creating I have to remind myself one thing: purpose first.
"The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." -Unknown
