Focus and Direct to Get Powerful Results
Do the most important thing to get the most important results
Directing Power
Gently flowing water can create wonderfully smooth rocks. And if you force water at high pressure through a small hole, it can cut through metal. And then there is light. How many of us conducted our own experiments, after learning that a magnifying glass can focus the sun’s rays to create enough heat to start a fire? In the same way, actions that are focused and directed can produce powerful results.
When I first got the opportunity to work on my dreams full time my expectations were high. I thought I could devote 40 hours a week to my dreams, and in four years I could build my empire. But I slowly learned that even though I had 40 hours a week, it was extremely difficult to utilize all those hours effectively.
I spent way too much time analyzing and researching things because they were interesting! It felt like progress. But I was expending my power and time on things that were low value. I should have been creating.
I had the power to commit to my dream on a daily basis, but I wasn’t focusing and directing my power wisely.
Once we have identified our power sources we can look at how to focus and direct our power like a magnifying glass focuses and directs the power of the sun to create massive power.
Do the Most Important Thing
What is the most important thing? Surprisingly, the most important thing tends to be the thing we procrastinate doing.
If I'm a writer, I should be writing. If I'm a singer, I should be singing. If I'm a painter, I should be painting. Yes, we need to research, learn, and a thousand other things. But our creative work should be number one. Remember, when we were children, all we needed was paper and crayons, and off we went.
Power needs to be applied to the most important thing, each day, in order to make real progress, achieve our goals, and build our dreams. If you want to write a book, writing should be the priority, every day. Then, with the time that remains, you can research, evaluate tools, make connections, do some marketing, etc.
To use our power effectively we identify the most important thing, then apply our power to that one thing daily. This is the focusing and directing effect of the magnifying glass.
The Best Hours
Using our magnifying glass analogy, the noon sun on a clear day creates the most heat.
It is very difficult to do focused work for more than three or four hours in a day. Focused work is very draining. The key is to apply our focus to the most important thing when our energy level and concentration abilities are the highest. Then, use the remainder of our time to do lesser important tasks.
The bottom line is we only have so much energy to do focused work each day. Use that focused energy on the most important task — the thing that gets us closer to our goals.
Finally
Just like focusing the sun’s rays to generate heat, progress can be made much more quickly if we focus our power on the most important thing on a daily basis.
The key is:
1. Determine the most important action that generates real progress towards your goal.
2. Work on the most important action first, to take advantage of your best energy, and then do lesser important tasks with the remaining time.
This is simple, but not easy. There are many things that need to be done. There are a thousand distractions. And the ebb and flow of emotions can derail us. But the dream builder learns and overcomes.
To your success!
