Even if you are clear about your dream, there is a high probability it will evolve. Pursuing our dreams is a transforming and refining process; it causes us to grow. As we grow, we see new things and our dreams can change.
At one point I decided to be a travel writer. I created a blog and planned some travels. But after a few years I realized that I didn’t want to be on the road all the time. Traveling, photography, and writing took a lot of time and effort. It was fun, but it wasn’t sustainable because it wasn’t me. But I was getting closer.
I have experimented with many ideas over the years. Like Edison trying different filaments for his light bulb, I had to try each of my ideas, and keep trying until I solved the puzzle. What was the puzzle? For me, it is a burning desire to be more than I am. And this is a valid place to start. Something inside says more. And start with what you know. These are just some of the possibilities I pursued to greater and lesser degrees.

It’s pretty clear that writing is the common thread in all my experiments. There were a couple of other insights I gained through this process that helped me get clear on my calling (as I understand it today). The key point is none of my experiments were a waste of time. Each one gave me valuable information. Each of my experiments improved my skills.
We learn by doing. Learning what you don’t want is just as valuable as learning what you do want. Your dream is a refining process. Your dream is your teacher.
Each day you are becoming more.
To your success!
